Instructions

This task is about identifying short paraphrases of text. You are shown two short phrases and asked to indicate (on a scale of 1 (low) to 5 (high)) how equivalent they are in meaning.

Phrases that are about a similar topic, but do not refer to a similar concept, should be given low scores. Like computer monitor and hard drive.

Sometimes this may be difficult to judge because the two phrases are provided without context . For two phrases to get a 5, they should have equivalent meaning and also function equivalently in many contexts you can think of.

The scale is below. Please read it carefully as those who deviate from the directions risk having their HITS rejected.

5: The two phrases have equivalent meaning in many contexts.

Examples:
Phrase 1Phrase 2
professional adviceexpert opinion
contains datapossesses information

3: The two phrases can be seen to be roughly equivalent in a very narrow set of contexts.

Examples:
Phrase 1Phrase 2
human behaviorsocial activity
wild animalstray dog

1: The phrases are not equivalent at all. They could, however, still be related to each other in some other way like some of the examples below.

Examples:
Phrase 1Phrase 2
